The water was wide, too wide for me to swim across to Tennessee
But that’s the only place that I want to be tonight
So I built me a boat with sails made of letters that you wrote to me
I set it afloat and I took to the sea
Now there’s nothing but water waiting for me, waiting for me
Countless days and nights sailing by the skies and drifting with the tides
Just my boat and me, drinking my wine, with only your letters for company
So seasick so wasted so wet that I didn’t even notice the rain
Until the ink of the words that I read from the letters you wrote me
Lest I should forget, ran down the sails, as the wind howled and ripped them to shreds
Now there’s nothing but water waiting for me
And now I must go where it takes me
I’m all out at sea and there’s a tragedy on board this loveless vessel to contend with, so please don’t be offended if I take it on the chin and sail off into the wind
